To kick off day two of World MasterCard Fashion week was Adrian Wu. Adrian wowed the audience with yet another one of his avant-garde collections. Mixing the inspiration of 50′s housewives and atomic bombs, the collection was made mainly from polyurethane that was sprayed, moulded, hardened and painted. Performing as the models strut by was pianist Patrick Dilkie and singer Caitlin Comeau-Jarvis, creating a scene from an old bar.
After Adrian Wu’s artistic collection on the runway, we moved into the studio for a few shows. First starting with a designer who was debuting her collection for the first time at Toronto’s Fashion Week, a FAT (Fat alternative fashion week) favourite of ours, DeMoyo. Her collection included beautiful knits and tailored suits in fresh spring colors. Derived from African-European influences, “With In the Spira” was one of the main themes premiered by designer Paidemoyo Chideya. We know, and of course hope, this isn’t the last we will see DeMoyo on the runway.
Following DeMoyo, was Ashtiani’s by Golnaz Ashtiani. This was one of the spring 2013 collection that was a highlight at last season of Toronto’s Fashion Week. Ashtiani took inspiration from the 60s and created a collection that was very geometric, minimal, and clean. We loved the added cut-out/sheer compliments. Seems our favorite fashion decade was trending many runways this season.
Moving back into the runway room, the highly anticipated line by fashion rebel and project runway winner Evan Biddell, graced the runway. His spring/summer 2013 collection showcased an array of beautiful dresses in bold prints, there were so many we wanted to buy right off the runway. The pop-art patterns, leopard prints and impeccably tailored leather jackets almost had us picking our jaws up off the floor. After the show we found out that his designs are all one-of-a-kinds, and that Stacey Mackenzie had picked a few of his dresses right off that runway. You can find her wearing some of his designs, looking absolutely stunning in them we must add, on her blog http://staceymckenzie.com/tag/evan-biddell/.
Next up was the Mercedes-Benz startup which showcased eight finalists presenting their capsule collections. Each finalist received mentoring from a team of fashion professionals, a spread in Fashion magazine, and assistance on more technical fronts. The finalists were Christopher Bates, Hilary and Louanna Murphy of Dreamboat Lucy, Malorie Urbanovitch, Nicole Campre, DUY, Lauren Bagliore, Caitlin Power and Patty Nayel of Pure Magnolia. Crowned the winner at the end of the show was DUY, designed by Duy Nguyen.
DUY was also awarded a full show in March at the Fall/Winter 2013 World MasterCard Fashion Week in Toronto, next week. Check back here for our exclusive interview with DUY. They all showed impeccable collections and we hope to see more from all.
Following was Montreal designer Melissa Nepton to hit the runway. Melissa Nepton presented the perfect mix of deep summer hues and colours brought to light by the evening sun. Her impeccable attention to detail is showcased throughout her whole collection. Screaming comfort yet still sophisticated the pieces were sleek and had us swooning over the flow of the draping.
Closing day two of World MasterCard Fashion Week was Bustle, designed by husband and wife team Shawn Hewson and Ruth Promislow. The new spring/summer 2013 collection had a tropical safari theme, but very modern and daring. The very colorful collection included printed Hawaiian shirts with oversized floral patterns, slim-fit pants, shiny suits in grey, and shorts. Paint splatter prints on suits and shorts especially caught our eye.
Check back later for day 3 recap of World MasterCard Fashion Week spring/summer 2013. (Yeah, yesterday was a busy day for us)
